The Parkway Project: A Classic Gem with Modern, Timeless Features

Nestled along one of Minneapolis’ scenic lake parkways, (hence the name Parkway Kitchen), this 1930s Tudor home showcases stunning architecture that we sought to preserve while introducing sophisticated, high-performance spaces for daily living and entertaining. Our goal was to honor the home’s traditional charm while seamlessly integrating modern functionality in the new kitchen and butler’s pantry.

Like many older homes, this one had a kitchen that did not match the level of detail or sophistication of the rest of the home. The cabinetry doors and drawers were hard to pull open, finishes were dated, and some of the appliances didn’t work. There was much to be desired in this kitchen, especially for these homeowners, who love to cook and entertain.

While maintaining the original kitchen footprint, the new design increases the size of the appliances and incorporates a larger sink, all without sacrificing counter space. By opening up the back entry and repurposing an existing closet, we were able to create a new pantry, drop zone, and a wider entryway. For added versatility, a furniture-style wood island—beautiful yet moveable—enhances prep space without disrupting flow or walkways.

BEFORE PLAN AFTER PLAN

Throughout the kitchen, each design element was carefully curated to achieve an elegant aesthetic with striking details. Inset-style construction and materials like soapstone and limestone feel substantial and decidedly traditional. Details like the fluted range hood and unique corbel shape were inspired by original molding details in the home.

White oak cabinet interiors and inserts - for spices, cutlery, and vertical tray storage - add tactile warmth, elegance, and functionality.

The adjacent butler’s pantry was a heavily-used but dim and dated space for breakfast and barware, and is now revitalized with thoughtful updates. The cabinetry was replaced to increase the accessibility and functionality of the storage, and we incorporated a new bar sink, ice maker, and beverage refrigerator.

Additionally, a custom-designed banquette with a quartz-topped table creates a cozy, functional nook. Soft blue wallpaper featuring birds and botanicals, paired with a traditional lantern-style pendant and a large mirror to reflect natural light, transforms the space into a bright, cheerful retreat.
